More ways to use weights to anchor your marquee

A Gala Tent Marquee is a heavy duty product, and depending on the model you select, can take the force of consistent winds of up to around 30mph. However, it does need a bit of common sense and due care/attention when deciding whether or not to erect a Marquee in windy conditions, and even if it’s a calm day there is always the potential for a rogue gust of wind to catch beneath your tent, so we would always recommend that you add some manner of weight or anchorage to the Marquee, to ensure that it is being used safely.

How do I Weigh Down a Marquee on Hard Ground?

Unless you’re attending an event where there are anchor points built into the floor (quite often markets or motorsport events will have readymade anchor points), you would require something substantial to weigh down your Marquee on hard ground to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you. Gala Tent supplies three main weight options, with something available for most purposes and budgets.

Leg weight bags

(sold in pairs) are canvas sleeves which would require you to fill with a heavy substance such as sand or gravel, and you then strap one to each leg of your tent. When filled properly they will provide around 10kg of anchorage per bag, and we recommend a minimum of one per leg. The benefits to these items are that they allow you to travel light, provided you have something to fill the bags with when you get to your destination.

13kg Cast Iron Feet Weights

(sold in pairs) are exactly what they say they are. Cast Iron discs, with an insert cut from them to enable you to sit the weights around the leg and on the feet of your Marquee. They have been effective methods of anchoring a Marquee for several years, and we recommend that you use a minimum of one per leg. They are heavy for transporting, but they provide immediate and effective weighting for your Marquee. Be aware that due to the required hardware, Cast Iron Weights are NOT suitable for any leg if you are using ground bars.

Sand or water weight bags

(sold individually) are a product developed for our sister company Gala Performance, which is a specialist motorsport supplier. The items have been designed to transport exceptionally light, but can be filled with water at your destination to provide an unrivalled 50kgs of Marquee anchorage. The cost per kilo of weight in these products cannot be beaten anywhere in the UK, and they have proved incredibly popular since they were launched.

Gala Tent concrete weights are designed for all year round use, perfect for marquees, complemented with two carry handles which also double as anchoring points. They are also manufactured with precast recess at the base to maneuver with a pallet truck or trolley. Our marquee weights are versatile and can be used to secure any structure on soft or hard ground. Whether you are hosting a corporate event or a private event or just providing hospitably cover, security and safety is essential. Gala Tent provide secure marquee weights that can be used to ensure the safety of your marquee and guests. Our marquee weights provide the facility for the temporary buildings to be safely and easily secured.

A large plastic blue drum is also another way of providing a heavy-duty method of weighing your marquee down. These are manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These Drums are both food grade certified and UN approved meaning it has many different applications such as transporting and storing foodstuffs, pastes, chemicals, soaps, detergents, sanitisers and powders making it ideal for both domestic and commercial use. So handy for other storage uses as well, maybe double up on sanitiser, drinking water or even beer! - just add a tap. These are a special order item, so let us know if you’re looking at using a drum to anchor your gazebo and we’ll be happy to get you a price.

Water Barrel Weights
1000L Water Block Weights

1000 litre, or 220 gallons, is quite an extreme way of anchoring your marquee down, this is something you’ll see quite often when anchoring big marquees in open spaces, and is s super effective in doing its job. They are adopted by marquee hire companies when erecting a structure that they intend to leave up for a long period of time, and trust it to withstand whatever the Great British Weather throws at it.

So, if you were leaving the marquee erected for a long period of time or exposed to a very open space in adverse weather conditions this would be an option to consider, but we think there are probably alternative, less extreme ways of achieving it. That said, this would also be very attractive and make an ideal advertisement space if you were to cover it with a bespoke printed wrapping, which we can supply. This is a special order item, so please get in touch with the team if you’re thinking of adding one to your marquee.

How do I Weigh Down a Marquee on Soft Ground such as Grass?

Any of the above options are as suited for soft ground as they are concrete and hard standing surfaced, but if you’d prefer something a little more discrete and lightweight when erecting your Marquee, then the Tie-Down Ratchet Strap Storm Kits (sold in pairs) are the product for you. Each piece is made up of super-strong ratchet strap, coupled with a heavy duty tent peg, and will enable your tent to stand firm when others are blowing away. It is important to note that when you are anchoring your Marquee with the ratchet straps that you DO NOT attach it to the D-Rings of the roof canopy. A Gala Tent Marquee frame is strong enough for you to apply some pressure and strap the ratchets to the frame itself. They provide immediate results when weighing down your tent, and are a staple accessory for any customer looking to erect their tent on soft ground.

If you are using Marquee Ground Bars, then an additional method of weighing down your tent would be to utilise Heavy Duty Tent pegs. You can loop the hook of each peg over your ground bars (around one every two metres) and press it into the ground. Couple this option with using Storm Kits at each leg and you have yourself a weatherproof event tent.

As mentioned previously, it is important to use common sense when deciding whether or not to erect your Marquee in high winds. Gala Tent cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by tents being erected in adverse weather conditions, or by having inadequate anchoring by the user. Just remember, there’s really no such thing as too many Marquee weights, or tie-downs. The better anchored you are, the happier you’ll be when the wind comes up!
